The Story of the
Safety Performance Index

What is the SPI and how does it work?

All the activities we undertake in the area of occupational safety can be systematically recorded and evaluated. This allows us to measure our safety performance and proactively select the »right« activities.

Our SPI House consists of four Floors

In addition, our SPI activities to date show that safety is fun, employees are involved, and the content is developed together.
At the end of the day, there is a measurable improvement and it shows that occupational safety is a success.

Let’s use an example to illustrate the connection between safety and our SPI. Let’s say we own a house. If we take care of it regularly, it becomes more valuable. If we neglect it, it becomes worthless and maybe even useless. In the end, all that is left is the front, but there is no more life in the house. Someday someone may come and demolish that house, maybe start from scatch, or leave a gap. We also convey values in our attitudes and behaviors. This is shown in the SPI in four levels.

Using the example of our house, the first level would look something like this.

»I don’t care what others think or think of me. Even if, for example, a roof tile falls on the street, I don’t care, I’m sitting inside the house.«

The second level might look like this:

»I only care about the front because I don’t want my neighbor or even the whole street talking about me.«

In this case, visitors would rarely come to us because we do not want them to, or because no one feels comfortable in our interiors because they are neglected.

In level 3, we recognize the value of the house and have understood that we need to take care of the exterior and interior regularly, and that our house even has a garden that gives us pleasure.

In the fourth level, the house is the center of our life in which our family or relatives feel comfortable.

Our house is a place where we like to be, where we like to invite friends, where we like to spend time together, where we like to laugh, where we like to tell each other stories, and where we like to pass on these moments to the next generation.

The Safety Performance Index – SPI in detail

The SPI is our new and future tool for making occupational safety fit for the future. Above all, it is important to be proactive and to take safety into account in our daily work. This improves our occupational safety performance and prevents accidents and work-related illnesses. Risks are identified and resolved at an early stage before consequences occur.

Through the SPI, we move away from »We react after an accident and learn from this experience« to »We catch each other working safely« and work together to ensure safe conditions. However, this requires an open, constructive culture of error and personal willingness to commit to it.

RPI – Retrospective Performance Index

The 2nd floor. Key figures are aggregated here. These are based on retrospective factors such as accident frequency rate and accident severity, as well as prospective factors such as the number of observations or near-misses.

BPI – Behavior Performance Index

The 1st floor. It’s all about
safe behavior with an eye toward awareness and attitude.

PPI – Prevention Performance Index

The ground floor. This is not »only« about preventing accidents, but about enabling safe conditions widely.

CPI – Compliance Performance Index

The foundation. Understanding and complying with them is a must.
Without this understanding, there is no basis for further proactive development in occupational safety.
